Caring for a Cat

Cats are far more independent creatures than dogs; however the live to be at least 20 years old, but often live to an older age than that! This means you need to think about whether you are able to look after and care for them for that amount of time.

Cats also need a number to important items including; food, little, bowls, bedding and toys etc along with annual trips to the vets, vaccinations, and flea treatments and worming. It’s also a good idea to have your pet micro-chipped in case he/she gets lost or stolen. Cats are also extremely territorial pets and become very homely, this is something you need to consider when you go on holiday – there is the option of putting he/she into a cattery but they tend to find this unsettling, there also tend to be quite pricey.

Cats are perfect for people with a busy lifestyle due to them being independent as they are able to be on their own, they are also a good pet for the elderly as they don’t need taking out for excise. However they aren’t particularly good for young families as they tend to become jealous of babies easy, cat waste also has toxins in them which can be harmful to pregnant women.

There is then the type of cat you want, either a pedigree i.e. a ‘moggie’ or Siamese cat, you can also buy a cat from neighbours, relatives or breeders. Organisations like the Cats Protection League are also good places to buy a cat from.
