Over the years the popularity of traditional dog names has gone down with people now choosing to name their dog after their favourite celebrity, clothing label, film characters or even their favourite drink! Names that would have been popular in the past like Rover, Rex, Jake and Maggie have now been over looked by more popular fashion names.

However there is one traditional dog name that continues to top the most popular name for a dog and that it Max, though in a survey for the most popular dog names Max was knocked off the top spot in 2009 by the name Bella, which many have put down to the huge popularity of the Twilight Saga of books that have recently been made into films, in which the lead female is called Bella. There is still hope of the more traditional names as some do still appear in the top 40 list, these include;

There are some names that appear to be popular names with dogs of a certain breed, popular names for Chihuahuas are; Angel, Baby, Tinkerbell and Tiny. Golden Retrievers are a popular pet for people with children and so they tend to have more traditional names, some popular names for this breed are; Amanda, Delilah, Dusty, Harlow and Goldie. Yorkshire terriers are known for being little dogs that love attention and some of the popular names for these little dogs reflect this image; Baby, Little One, Nipper, Rascal and Bambi.
Celebrities have also joined the trend in using unusual names to call their furry friends, Paris Hilton’s Chihuahua is called Tinkerbell and another called Bambi, Joss Stones has a dog called Dusty Springfield, Ashlee Simpson’s dogs called Blonde, Kelly Osbournes little dog is call Piglet and Reese Witherspoon’s pooch is called Frank Sinatra.
