English Springer Spaniel's Health
The English cocker spaniel breed was originally bred as gun dogs and was used to fetch things, this is obvious in their nature as they love to play about and explore. One of the things that makes the English Springer spaniel different from the other spaniels is their long legs, which means they are much faster than other spaniel breeds. It also means they require a good amount of exercise to let out its energy, they also enjoy hunting which means they are likely to run off into hedges and explore.
The main health issues that have been linked to the Springer spaniels are hip dysplasia; this often leads to then suffering from arthritis. They can also suffer from PRA, progressive retinal atrophy, this disease affects their vision and in the worst cases it can lead to complete loss of vision all together. Also like all dogs with floppy ears Springer spaniels are prone to suffering from ear problems, mainly infections. If your Springer spaniel does suffer from ear problems you can get ear canal treatment to help them, this treatment should be carried out once every week.
They can also suffer from eye problems; these include inward & outward curling eyelashes and in some case an extra row of eyelashes. Although this will be uncomfortable for your pet it isn’t life threatening, corrective surgery is available. Like all dogs you should make sure your Springer spaniel has a healthy and balanced diet as they are able to put weight on easily and the more overweight they become the more health issues they are likely to suffer from.
When getting any pet you should always take out a pet insurance cover for them, with so many different policies to choose from you will be able to find the perfect one to suit your pet. Having insurance for them will mean you will be able to provide them with whatever care or treatment they might need if they are ill or have an accident, meaning they will be back and running about in no time.
