German shepherds are seen as one of the newest breed of dogs, they were originally bred to herd sheep as working dogs. They are very strong, intelligent and have very high abilities so they are today still used for working purposes, particularly by the police force. Due to interbreeding the breed has been linked to a number of health problems like elbow and hip dysplasia, which might cause them to suffer when they are older. The breed is also noticeable due to their open standing up ears , due to their ears being open they are a breed that are more at risk of getting ear infections, though these are easily cured at your vets. They are also prone to bloating due to their large bone structure, but keeping an eye on their diet and making sure they get plenty of exercise will help to prevent this from happening.

Like all dogs those who are used for working purposes are more likely to suffer from accidents if health problems, this is due to them being more exposed to situations that have number of risks about them. German shepherds are one of the most used working dogs around the world due to their loyalty and intelligence; amongst their skills dogs from the breed working for the army have been trained to parachute from an aircraft!

These dogs make great family pets and will work well at keeping your family save, as with all breeds they have a chance of getting ill or into accidents but it is only a few that will. Making sure that they have come from health parents and have been breed properly will minimise the risks of them suffering from any problems.
