Pugs Health
Pugs are very easily noticed dogs due to their small stocky bodies and cute winkled faces and little curly tails. Even though they are a small breed they are known to have big personalities, they are little strong willed characters but will never be aggressive towards anyone, making them great with children. They enough playing about with both adults and children, they are always alert which means they can make good guard dogs.
They are known to suffer from a number of health issues that are a result of their small wrinkled faces, it is important that owners clean in between their winkles regularly to prevent any infections. Also due to their short faces they can suffer from eye problems like scratched corneas due to their low and prominent eye brow bone. They can also suffer from entropion due to their eyebrow bone; this is when either eyelashes point in and irritate the eye or the eyelid grows inwards, surgery is the best used treatment to correct this.
A serious illness that is linked to the disease is granulomatous meningoencephalitis; this is inflammation of and around the brain which normal results in the dog dying. Also like other dogs with flat heads they can suffer from hemivertebrae, this can be seen in a number of forms like a curled tail (though this doesn’t tend to cause them pain) the worse form is when they spines are affected, this normally happens when Pugs are growing and results in pressure being placed on their backs.
You should also be aware that some Pugs have a weak immune system and so can pick up demodectic mange, these are little mites that get into their fur and skin, and this is because they have a fairly low immune system, though it can be treated. Making sure that your Pug comes from a health background and good breeding can reduce the chance in illnesses, especially hereditary.
